How Long Does Acrylic Paint Take to Dry? Why Sources Disagree

Thin acrylic paint, about 5 mils wet — roughly what one loaded brush coat leaves — is touch-dry in 10 to 30 minutes and ready to recoat within two hours at 77°F (25°C) and 50% relative humidity. Varnishing is a separate threshold: Golden Artist Colors asks at least 72 hours on thin films, and one to two weeks where the paint is impasto. Films a quarter inch thick or more take months, sometimes years. Published answers span ten minutes to years because each figure measures a different drying stage at a different film thickness.

"Dry" names eight different events, and most labels don't say which one

ASTM D1640/D1640M-14(2022), Standard Test Methods for Drying, Curing, or Film Formation of Organic Coatings, is the method most manufacturers run, and it does not produce one number. It separates set-to-touch, dust-free, tack-free, dry-to-touch, dry-hard, dry-through, dry-to-recoat and print-free. The companion specification, ASTM D3924, fixes the room: 23 ± 2 °C (73.5 ± 3.5 °F), 50 ± 5% relative humidity, free of drafts.

A bare "dries in 20 minutes" is a compressed claim. In the land registry I read titles where one word on the front page, freehold or flat, was answerable only from a schedule filed behind it. Paint sheets work the same way.

Until early 2024 I told readers the manufacturer's figure was the authority and third-party blogs the noise. I stopped when I laid manufacturers against themselves and found one company publishing three different waits for the same operation, all correct.

Why the published figures disagree

None is wrong. The varnish sheet and the application guidelines answer different questions, and the 72-hour line names no thickness, which is why it gets applied to paint it was never scoped for.

Just Paint, Golden's research arm, weighed drying films over a 60-day cycle and found that ones with real structural integrity still held 7 to 15% of their original volatiles. "Dry" is a threshold somebody chose.

Thickness moves the number further than anything else

Wet-film thickness and dry-film thickness are different measurements, and the gap between them is where the drying time hides. Sherwin-Williams publishes 42 ± 2% volume solids for its Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic, applied at 3.75–6.0 wet mils to yield 1.5–2.5 dry mils. Their own 5.0 mils wet works out to roughly 2.1 mils dry. More than half of what you laid down has to leave before the paint is paint.

Just Paint tested that departure at 10, 62.5 (1/16 inch), 125 (1/8 inch) and 250 mils. Ten-mil films go touch dry in minutes and reach a solid state in about three days. Thicker ones skin first, and Golden's conclusion is blunt: the skin "dramatically impedes the movement of volatiles out of the film." The surface reads finished while the interior still sheds water, which is what produces a dent under a fingernail a week later.

Temperature, humidity, and what is underneath

Golden sets a hard floor at 49°F (9°C). Below it, temperatures "will not allow the polymer solids to properly coalesce to form a continuous film, and may result in film failure (cracking, adhesion failure, powdered film)." Above the floor, the Sherwin-Williams sheet shows how steeply the clock responds. At 5.0 mils wet and 50% RH, touch runs 1 hour at 50°F, 30 minutes at 77°F and 15 minutes at 100°F; recoat runs 4 hours, 2 hours and 1 hour. Fifty degrees quarters the recoat interval.

Humidity pushes the other way. Golden's comfortable ceiling is 75% RH, above which evaporation slows measurably; Sherwin-Williams caps application at 85% RH and wants surfaces at least 5°F above the dew point.

Then the support. Absorbent grounds like watercolour paper and gessoed cotton duck wick water and additives out of the first layer and cut your working time; sealed panels leave the water nowhere to go but up. For wood, the Master Painters Institute percentages in Dunn-Edwards' moisture-content bulletin allow no more than 12% moisture content for interior wood, 15% exterior, 6% for furniture. Paint above those and you trap moisture under the film.

Acrylic against oil: two chemistries, two clocks

Acrylic dries by subtraction. Water leaves, the polymer spheres are forced into contact, capillary forces pack them into a honeycomb, and they deform into a continuous film in the process Golden calls coalescence. Oil does none of this. Winsor & Newton put it plainly: oil colour "must be left to cure through the process of oxidation."

Winsor & Newton give 2 to 12 days to touch-dry for Artists' Oil Colour and Winton in thin films, varying by pigment, against 18 to 24 hours for their Griffin Alkyd. Acrylic reaches touch-dry in minutes.

The varnish gap is wider. Golden asks 72 hours for thin acrylic. Winsor & Newton's Artists' Satin Varnish label says not to use it until the painting is completely dry at 6 to 12 months, while the same company's drying-times guide gives three months. Between the two sits a 30- to 120-fold difference in one decision.

Painters arriving from oil transfer the wrong rule both ways. Waiting months to varnish acrylic costs only time; the expensive error is the reverse, where acrylic's speed teaches you that touch-dry means workable, and that habit on a thick passage takes paint off with your tape.

Touch, recoat, mask, move, varnish: five thresholds, not one

  1. Touch. ASTM D1640's finger check: the middle finger placed on the film without pressure leaves no mark on removal.
  2. Recoat. Just Paint specifies no mandatory wait between standard acrylic layers. Gesso needs at least an hour or the second pass lifts the first. OPEN colours take a full day.
  3. Mask. Where hobby painters lose work. Just Paint recommends hours or days for thicker passages and names three days as usually safe.
  4. Move. Golden asks 7 days of drying after varnishing before packing, shipping or framing.
  5. Varnish. 72 hours minimum on thin films, one to two weeks on impasto, a full day for the isolation coat to cure, 24 hours between waterborne varnish coats.

Retarder shifts all five. Golden's limit is about 15%, seven parts paint to one, because retarder contains no binder and every added percent dilutes the binder in the film. At 3 to 10% it keeps paint from skinning for up to six hours.

I ignored the impasto line once. I had the 72-hour figure from Golden's varnish sheet, quoted it accurately in a piece, then used it on a panel of mine carrying a ridge of heavy body colour maybe 3 mm proud. The varnish went milky and stayed milky. Golden's other document gives a week or two for exactly that paint. Reading one sheet without pulling the sibling — a title register without the filed plan — cost me six weeks of work.

When it stays tacky, lifts, or dries unevenly

Persistent tack after several days points first at retarder above 15% in a thick application, where the glycol never fully releases and leaves what Just Paint calls a skin like soft gum. Check the ratio you mixed, then humidity, since retarder is hygroscopic, then the support: a sealed panel gives the water no downward exit.

Lifting during recoat means the layer beneath had not reached the stage you assumed. Gesso recoated inside an hour lifts. Fast-drying gels over OPEN lift too; Golden asks two weeks after touch dry before that combination.

Cracking and wrinkling have a cause worth knowing. Golden states that "a strong breeze, especially one directly on the paint surface, can cause film formation failure, such as cracking and/or wrinkling." Heat is the same trap: overheating "can cause bubbling or burn the acrylic film."

Still correctable: a thin over-retarded film that is merely tacky usually resolves given weeks in normal conditions. Not correctable: a film that failed to coalesce has already formed wrong, and waiting does not unform it. Sand back and rebuild, or accept it. On a piece with real value that call belongs to a conservator.

Sample panels make your drying times predictable

Every figure above was measured on somebody else's paint, on somebody else's support, in a room held at 73.5°F and 50% RH. Not your room. Six offcuts close the gap:

  1. Prime three offcuts of the support you actually paint on.
  2. Lay down three real thicknesses on each: a glaze, a normal brush coat, your heaviest impasto. Write down every additive and the retarder percentage.
  3. Record temperature and relative humidity from a hygrometer at the start.
  4. Run the ASTM finger check at 30 minutes, 2 hours, 24 hours, 72 hours and one week.
  5. Press masking tape across each film at 24 and 72 hours, pull it, and log what lifts.
  6. Keep the log somewhere you will find it next year.

The strongest argument against this is a good one. For a hobby painter working thin on paper in an ordinary room, the label figure is right almost every time, and a testing ritual is friction that stops people painting. Fair, and I will grant more: at 5 mils and 77°F, Sherwin-Williams' two-hour recoat has so much margin that I have never seen it fail. It breaks down at tape, varnish, shipping and impasto, where failure is expensive and where you have no panel because you never made one.

I cannot vouch for the far end of the range. My oldest logged panels date from 2023, so I have watched acrylic films for three years, not thirty; the months-to-years figure for quarter-inch films is the manufacturers' testing, not mine. What I can vouch for is the window between 72 hours and two weeks.

How can you dry acrylic paint fast?

Raise the temperature and lower the humidity rather than blasting the surface. Sherwin-Williams' data shows touch-dry falling from 30 minutes at 77°F to 15 minutes at 100°F. Golden warns that a strong breeze on wet paint causes cracking and wrinkling, and overheating can burn the film.

Should you let acrylic paint dry between layers?

For ordinary acrylic colour, Just Paint specifies no mandatory wait, because acrylic bonds readily to acrylic. Gesso is different: allow at least one hour between coats or the second pass lifts the first. Layers with retarder, glazing liquid or OPEN products need up to a full day.

How can you tell if acrylic paint is dry?
